I've included these examples of writing from graduate school and later for two reasons. First, much of my academic writing broke the mold of research paper or class essay. I believe in letting personal experience inform, but not overwhelm, any good writing. And I believe in using plain, direct language that's free of unnecessary jargon, but considers the audience at every turn. Second, these pieces—and indeed, my successful academic career—highlight many of the skills needed to create good marketing and technical communications: rapid learning of complex concepts, intellectual organization, high verbal abilities, mental flexibility, dogged research, perceptiveness, and a breadth of life experience.
