Reading

I've explained elsewhere my belief that reading is one of the keys to being a good writer.

However, figuring out a way to demonstrate my experience as a reader was a challenge. At first I thought I would photoshop together a pano of all my books. Then I decided it be more interesting and persuasive to come up with a list of some of the disparate things I've been able to accomplish by being a good reader:

  • Earned three college degrees
  • Mostly successfully trained three Australian Shepherds
  • Swapped the engine in an '87 Subaru
  • Gained a working knowldege of the construction trades (plumbing, electrical, masonry, rough and finish carpentry)
  • Learned how to find my way through the wilderness with a map and a compass
  • Picked up some natural history, biology and geology
  • Acquired the rudiments of playing a guitar
  • Learned how to use dozens of Mac and Windows applications
  • Became proficient at building bicycle wheels
  • Grew a number of small, productive vegetable gardens
  • Collected the information needed to start and run a small business
  • Came to realize I would never be good enough at math to really understand electronics (though I like to solder)
