I've explained elsewhere my belief that reading is one
of the keys to being a good writer.
However, figuring out a way to demonstrate my experience
as a reader was a challenge. At first I thought I would photoshop together
a pano of all my books. Then I decided it be more interesting and persuasive
to come up with a list of some of the disparate things I've been able to
accomplish by being a good reader:
- Earned three college degrees
- Mostly successfully trained three Australian Shepherds
- Swapped the engine in an '87 Subaru
- Gained a working knowldege of the construction trades (plumbing,
electrical, masonry, rough and finish carpentry)
- Learned how to find my way through the wilderness with a map and a compass
- Picked up some natural history, biology and geology
- Acquired the rudiments of playing a guitar
- Learned how to use dozens of Mac and Windows applications
- Became proficient at building bicycle wheels
- Grew a number of small, productive vegetable gardens
- Collected the information needed to start and run a small business
- Came to realize I would never be good enough at math to really understand
electronics (though I like to solder)
