I have managed a number of large, long-term projects,
mainly websites, multi-media and publications. I have also managed small
businesses, services and staff.
I'm sure my colleagues and employees over the years
would describe me as respectful and friendly. I would describe my management
style as hands-off when it comes to people and hands-on when it comes
to the project or business itself.
I also don't think you can manage
well if you haven't at least tried doing the job the person you're managing
is doing.

- Faculty
Multimedia Lab For the last several years, I've run this lab
at Reed College, supervising a number of students working on various
faculty technology projects.
- NSF-AIRE@REED This
website documents Reed's implementation of a National Science Foundation
Grant. I managed the project in its entirety, including web and video
production, server back-end, and writing/editing. I directly supervised
web workers and worked with a videographer and about eight Reed science
faculty. The site graphics have been re-made since the original site
went up (in 2000), but the content remains essentially unchanged.
- ETC video This video was produced
as part of the dedication of a new technology center and library wingbuilt
at Reed College. Based on input from various campus constituencies,
I created this video in its entirety, including scripting, filming,
most of the editing and post-production. I also managed a photographer
and several assistants. You need Quicktime to
view the movie.
- Formosa
site This Reed College website was a long-term academic project
providing materials on the colonial history of Formosa (Taiwan).
I managed this project for its last two years, until its go-live
date in 1999. I supervised web production assistants and worked
with the content provider, Professor Douglas Fix. Since its inception,
the site has recieved traffic from around the world and is a widely recognized academic
resource.
- Getty
Center This Reed College website is the culmination of a three-year
long project documenting the architecture of the Getty Center in
southern California. I managed this project for its last two years.
I supervised three web production assistants and worked with the
content provider, Professor Charles Rhyne. Since its inception in
2001, the site continues to get the heaviest traffice at Reed and
is a widely recognized academic resource.
- Unalayee Food
Program. For several summers I ran the food program at this non-profit,
wilderness summer camp. This involved menu-planning, purchasing and
distributing meals to about 130 people in a remote backcountry setting.
The program was run in accordance with federal guidelines, which I
documented in voluminous paperwork so that we could continue to receive
Department of Agriculture assistance.
- Retail Businesses: I've served in a management postion at
several retail business. I was the business manager for a coffeeshop/restaurant,
I ran a small-town bike shop and was the systems manager for an outdoor
retailer/manufacturer, Western
Mountaineering. In all of these positions I supervised employees,
developed training and business processes, and implemented new systems.
- I served as all-purpose, general editor of a consumer newsletter
for an outdoor retailer. The
Trading Post newsletter featured articles from local and national
free-lance writers and original art-work. I was honored when it was
archived at the University of North Carolina.
